The OANRP is an army based resource management program based in Oahu. They strive to protect indigenous plant and animal species that are threatened or endangered on Oahu. They are responsible for managing over 2000 plant and animal species. They have already saved 2 species from going extinct. The way they conquer this daunting task is they pair up with other resource managing departments and work alongside with them. It is a kind of divide and conquer strategy. One organization that they have been working with is the National Resource Program (NRP). The NRP has potential to save so many native plants on Oahu. They have employed over 100 people already. They also have a 12 million dollar budget to work with. This is a good sign, because now programs have all the resources need to save the endangered species of Oahu. The success of the saving of these endangered plants and animals rests in our hands. Thankfully there are programs like these to step up to the plate, and do what is needed to be done. However, programs like these need help too. They are always looking for volunteers or new employees.
OANRP offers conservation-based volunteer service trips in several forests on army land. Please contact Kim Welch or Celeste Ventresca (Ph: (808) 655-7741) for details.
